Description
Responsibilities Include:
-
Engineering development for various Brightdrop products - including requirements gathering, concept generation, detailed design, prototyping, analysis & verification testing, cross functional reviews and manufacturing release.

Understand, dissect, and solve complex design challenges, both independently and as a member of a design team.
-
Championing a human centered design approach to product development efforts.
-
Efficient and appropriate use of design tools including hand sketches, spreadsheets, solid modeling software, workshop tools, catalog suppliers, rapid prototype technologies, and testing methodologies to conceptualize, design, prototype, and document the mechanical designs of parts and assemblies.

Create well-structured parametric models of parts and assemblies in CAD that include documented feature trees so they can be easily understood and modified by your colleagues.

Evaluate designs before down-selecting to the most preferred using methods such as FMEA to appropriately evaluate risk or Pugh Matrix to compare multiple concepts against ranked requirements.

Participating in brainstorming and conceptualization efforts to provide input into design solutions for system architecture development, mechanism alternatives, component part breakups, and manufacturing process options.

Providing system layout documentation / underlays to project teams that communicate and document any constraints such as fixed component locations, packaging envelopes etc.

Using proof-of-principle models and other early evaluation methods to test conceptual approaches.

Applying technical expertise of engineering principles such as mechanics, kinematics, mechatronics, electro-mechanical systems development, structural analysis and thermodynamics

Utilizing analytical tools, such as FEA and CFD, to evaluate the structural, thermal, and fluid flow characteristic of designs.
-
Developing QC or detail drawings which communicate design intent and critical to quality characteristics.
-
Supporting the fabrication and evaluation of verification prototypes, and evaluation the capabilities of suppliers as appropriate.
-
Providing status updates to Project Managers and pro-actively seeking to make sure that project goals, tasks, open issues status, schedules, and budgets are understood and in alignment.

Mentor less experienced engineers on first principals of mechanism design and fundamentals of thermodynamics, how to perform tolerance stack-up analysis, electro-mechanical systems development, and best practices in CAD.

Organize time, work efficiently, and meet aggressive project development schedules.
-
Develop proof of concept designs and support builds on initial concepts.
-
Host technical design reviews and provide regular feedback to colleagues on their designs.
-
Create and review DFMEAs and provide technical input and guidance.
-
Drive for on time product execution.

Document open issues, status and closure.

Communicate resource needs and timeframes, to facilitate the appropriate staffing of project teams.

Required Qualifications:
-
Minimum of 5+ years experience in hardware design.
-
A BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering.
-
A BS in Mechatronics Engineering is preferred.
-
Experience in designing complex electro-mechanical systems and assemblies.
-
Excellent skills in 3D CAD, Solidworks strongly preferred.
-
Experience utilizing 3D Experience PLM or Solidworks Enterprise PDM or Solidworks Manage PLM system
-
Well versed in core mechanical engineering analytical skills with understanding of mechanical tolerances and ability to perform detailed tolerance loop analysis.
-
Experience with joint electrical and mechanical design integration.
-
Experience with motion or robotics control, peripheral HW such as cameras, sensors, actuators, switches etc.
-
Superior communication skills including written, oral, and graphic presentation.
-
Awesome analytical and organizational skills; ability and commitment to produce timely and highly accurate work.

Fluency with Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required.
-
Knowledge of DFM practices and experience with a variety of manufacturing processes including injection-molded plastics, formed and stamped sheet metal, castings, extrusions, welding, adhesives, finishes, etc.

Preferred experience with structural and thermal analysis techniques for small to large electronics packaging systems.

Experience with industrial product design and development.

Compensation:
The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant in the California Bay Area which includes the following counties: Marin, Contra Costa, San Francisco, Alameda, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz might be paid in accordance with the California law. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of the California Bay Area.
The salary compensation range for this role: $106,460 - $161,240
